Goodbye Bad Comcast, Hello Better Verizon

comcast logo Verizon logo

I called Comcast last week to ask why I some of my favorite channels said “Please Wait” instead of showing the channel. The customer service representative said that I didn’t get those channels — my channel package only includes broadcast channels plus a few others (QVC, DCTV and others I rarely watched).

It was an unpleasant surprise to find out that I was paying more than $70/month for internet access and TV channels that are available for the taking over the air. Internet access is great but it is not worth $70 a month. Being a concerned shopper I decided to find a less expensive option for internet access. Continue reading

Fire in Adams Morgan is a Reminder to Backup Your Important Files

Mozy Logo

On October 1st a building a few blocks from mine had an electrical problem that caused a fire that destroyed the entire building (read the Post’s story about it here). Adam and I were talking about the fire that Monday night at tennis and thinking about complete destruction of one’s personal belongings seems to make photographers say that we’d grab our negatives and hard drives and run out of the blazing building. Forget clothes and furniture and our important files. It’s all about the photography, even the old crap stuff from early on.

The safer way to keep digital photographs around through fires, lightning strikes, hard drive failures or spilled drinks on the laptop is to backup the irreplaceable files off site.  The idea makes perfect senese but I never seriously looked into doing it myself until that fire in the neighborhood.

I researched companies that provide online backup services and I am using one now called Mozy. I like it because they have a free 2 GB version that you can use with no strings attached.  All you do is tell the software which folders or files need to be backed up and then when the computer is not being used it connects to Mozy’s servers and securely saves everything.  If you add items to the folder then the new items get backed up in the subsequent backups.  If you have more than 2 GB of critical files, photos or emails you can pay a reasonable $4.95/month for unlimited storage. That is some peace of mind! If you want to sign up for Mozy then do it here and we both get another 256 MB of free storage space.

What are you doing to backup your files? Are you prepared if your hard drive doesn’t spin when you wake up in the morning? Leave your thoughts & happy/horror stories in the comments.

Car Free in DC

Car Free DC

I dream of waking up in the morning and seeing the sidewalks full of walkers and the streets filled with bikes, scooters, buses and drivers car pooling. An organization called Car Free DC is having a car free in DC day on Tuesday that may bring us closer to my dream. The organization’s mission sounds wonderful:

CarFree DC’s mission is to promote car-free development that enhances local and global environmental quality, improves public health, raises awareness of environmental issues, and fosters a sense of community.

See you on the streets for the daily commute and be sure to sign up for the challenge before you start your day.

Make a pledge to be completely car free on DC Car Free Day. You can walk, skate, bike, scoot, take the bus or train, or telecommute. If you simply can’t avoid the car, pledge to be “car-lite” by carpooling or vanpooling.

CarFreeD.C. and take the pledge.

Finding Stolen Bikes with Craigslist

Someone’s black Cannondale road bike was stolen a few blocks from my home on Friday morning. I hope the post on Craigslist will help people in the neighborhood track down the robbers and the bike.

dear fellow biker. On my way to work I saw 2 Latino men one with a camaflouge base ball cap and “W” on it and his friend in a Magna bike cut the cable of your lock and steal your bike. I asked them is that your bike and yelled at them for stealing your bike. Unfortunately they road off with The black cannondale road bike with white lettering. I followed the guys down Euclid but they threatened me so I found a cop on Columbia Rd parked who headed in their direction. I am sorry you lost your bike, and wish could done more. Maybe the cops got them, you should check. Stolen 8/31/07 about 7:15am.

This comes a day after Jeff told me his bike was stolen and he never recorded the serial number — something the police needed to make an official report and I assume to track down the bike. I’m going to photograph my serial number right now store it in a secure location online.

Skype Outage Affects House Guest

My friend Bob Cook is in town for a job interview and to do some post grad school R&R. When I went to work I left him to his own devices to call about job leads. Since I’ve got a single cell phone and no land line phone I suggested he do his calling from Skype. As luck would have it it was during those days that Skype had issues and the program was unable to connect to the Skype network.

Yesterday Skype wrote me, a paying customer, to apologize and give me a free week of service. This is a nice gesture and I appreciate it. Still, what I am happy about is that Bob’s calls were not significantly affected by the lack of service. Besides, what does a week of free calling cost the company? On my plan their free 7 days equals a grand total of $.30.

As a goodwill gesture to all you faithful Skype Pro, Skype Unlimited, SkypeIn or Skype Voicemail customers, we’re adding an additional seven days to your current subscription, free of charge. And even if you didn’t miss out on using Skype last week – you can still have a week free on Skype, on the house!

Bike to Work Day

Biking to Work on R Street

Today is Bike to Work Day 2007. I didn’t have time to meet at the “pit stop” near work but I did ride safely to work. It was my first time to ride in on my new road (actually cyclo-cross) bike and that bike just flies down the street!

Do your part to make the city more livable today and get on public transportation, walk or bike to work.

Update: Or use a scooter like my cousin Nate.  How’s the Xooter doing, Wolf?  (thanks Lydia!)
